Once again, the MCHS Grizzly Band has been selected to participate in the BAND OF PRIDE event, which occurs over Veterans Day weekend. 

The November 2012 event will take place in San Diego, 

where the BAND OF PRIDE will perform at the USS Midway, 
then take to the streets for the Veterans Day Parade.

SCHEDULE as of 11/7/12 (subject to change)

Friday, Nov. 9                   
6:00 am  Report to MCHS Band Room...modified game day attire with new MCHS Band T-SHirt
7:00 am  Bus departs for Merced Amtrak station
8:51 am    Depart via train from Merced
12:02 pm  Arrive Bakersfield
12:10 pm  Depart Bakersfield for LA on Amtrak bus

2:30 pm    Arrive in LA on Amtrak bus
3:00 pm    Depart LA for San Diego on Amtrak train
5:47 pm   Arrive at San Diego Santa Fe Station
Walk to Hampton Inn  a couple of blocks from the train station. Free wi-fi and free high speed Internet access in each room, pool, exercise room, underground parking, one block from San Diego Bay. 
Stay at Hampton Inn San Diego, Pacific Highway

7:30 pm  Dinner and chaperone-supervised activities
10:00 pm  CERFEW
 
Saturday, Nov. 10            
Daily morning breakfast and gathering in the Pacific Room to begin the day's activities.
6:30am     Wake-up/dress (modified game day attire: slacks, white MCHS Band Shirt, fedora (if desired)
7-8:30am  Breakfast buffet at hotel
9:30am      FORMATION: Pacific Room. Proceed to Balboa Park
10am-3:45 pm  Balboa Park and Museums, chaperone lunch purchase
  • San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum
  • San Diego Natural History Museum
  • San Diego Museum of Art
  • Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
  • San Diego Museum of Man
  • San Diego Model Railroad Museum
  • Museum of Photographic Art

3:45 pm   FORMATION:  Designated spot in Balboa Park 
4-5 pm     Prepare/dress for evening (formal/sem-formtl attire)
5 pm        Depart for Hard Rock Cafe
5:30-6:45 pm  Dinner @ Hard Rock Cafe, 801 4th Avenue
6:45 pm  PROCEED from Hard Rock Cafe to Copely Symphony Hall
8-10pm   San Diego Symphony, featuring "Night at the Cotton Club"  
11 pm      CERFEW

Sunday, Nov. 11              
Daily morning breakfast and gathering in the Pacific Room to begin the day's activities.
5 am              Wake-up/dress (modified game day attire: slacks, white MCHS Band Shirt, fedora (if desired)
6-7 am           Breakfast buffet at hotel
7 am              FORMATION: Pacific Room. Escort meets band at hotel7:40-8 am     DEPART for Band of Pride Tribute 
8-11:00 am   Form for Band of Pride tribute performance in San Diego's Little Italy on India Street. 
11am-noon   Band of Pride performance. Conducted by Dr. Gary Gilroy, director of bands at Fresno State University. You will have lunch in Little Italy.
5:15-5:30 pm  DEPART on foot for the HORNBLOWER Cruises, Grape Street Pier. Cruis begins loading at 5:30pm
6-8 pm             Evening dinner/bay cruise. As the sun sets on the bay, marching band students will enjoy a fun-filled awards dinner dance cruise around the San Diego Bay.
8 pm                Cruise ends. RETURN to hotel. Chaperone supervised activities
10 pm              CERFEW

Monday, Nov. 12             
Daily morning breakfast and gathering in the Pacific Room to begin the day's activities.
5 am              Wake-up/dress (Uniform of the Day:  Class-A uniform, shakoes, black gloves/shoes/socks)
6-6:45 am      Breakfast buffet at hotel
6:45 am          FORMATION: Pacific Room.
7-7:45 am      DEPART for parade competition and Veterans Day Parade; Pacific Coast Hwy & West Cedar St.

Veterans Day Parade.  The 26th annual Veterans Day Parade will march through the streets of the Historic Gaslamp Quarters, which will come alive when marching bands perform to enthusiastic crowds.
7:45 pm            Officials line up bands for competition
8-9:30 am         MARCHING BAND CONTEST. Band march in division order (smallest to largest)
9:30-10 am       Award Ceremony behind City Hall
10-11 am           Move to parade staging area, check-in at W. Cedar St. & Pacific Coast Hwy. 
11 am-1:30 pm  SAN DIEGO VETERANS DAY PARADE
1:30-2:30 pm     LUNCH at Gaslight District. Chaperone lunch purchase.
2:30-3:30 pm     RETURN to hotel
3 pm                   FREE TIME/ Homework/etc.  Pool at hotel available. Dinner at chaperone direction. IF LEAVING HOTEL WITH CHAPERONE, STUDENTS MUST BE IN MODIFIED GAME-DAY ATTIRE! NO JEANS, T-SHIRTS, OR DIRTY SNEAKERS.
10 pm               CURFEW

Tuesday, Nov. 13             
Daily morning breakfast and gathering in the Pacific Room to begin the day's activities.
6:30am     Wake-up/dress (modified game day attire: slacks, white MCHS Band Shirt, fedora (if desired)
7-8:30am  Breakfast buffet at hotel
9:00am      FORMATION: Pacific Room. 

9:30 am    DEPART for San Diego Zoo

10am-4pm Day @ San Diego Zoo 
The zoo is located in Balboa Park, housing over 3,700 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies. It is also one of the few zoos in the world that houses a giant panda. The San Diego Zoo is on 100 acres of parkland. It is one of the world's few zoos to have almost all of its major exhibits within open-air enclosures; in fact. the only major exhibition building on the grounds is the Reptile House.  

4 pm                  DEPART for hotel
4:30-5:30 pm   Activities at hotel
5:30 pm            FORMATION TBA
5:45-10 pm      Chaperone supervised activities. Dinner. For those individuals who purchased tickets in advance, prepare for play (Modified game day attire) Depart for Sheryl and Harvey White Theater in the Round
10 pm              CURFEW for those students not attending plan

Wednesday, Nov. 14       
Daily morning breakfast and gathering in the Pacific Room to begin the day's activities.
6-8 am        Breakfast buffet at hotel. Pack, prepare for departure
8 am           FORMATION: Pacific Room

8:30-9 am  Depart hotel and walk to train station
9:47 am     Depart via Amtrak train for Merced
6:45 pm     Train arrives in Merced. Load bus for MCHS. Bus leaves Merced
8:00 pm     Bus arrives at MCHS

UPCOMING San Diego TIMELINE
  • All adult chaperones must be fingerprinted by LiveScan and have valid TB test.
  • 3-7pm November 8, drop off luggage at band room

NOTES
  • Be prepared for adverse weather...there is a possibility of rain
  • Please follow directions as quickly and efficiently as possible
  • Do not forget FEDORAS for the Band of Pride performance
  • The swimming pool at the hotel is for our use (if supervised by an adult). You MUST wear bathing suits if you enter the pool.
  • On the train, please allow those working on homework to use tables. They take priority over cards, games, etc.
  • Remember to bring snacks/food for trip to San Diego; we will prepare sandwiches/snacks for return trip.
  • TAKE CARE OF YOUR UNIFORMS! This is a very important performance for the Grizzly band...our pride and attention to detail is what separates us from the others. SHOW SoCal WHO we ARE!
